Clearly, countless names, numbers, and places function as symbols in Revelation. Armageddon is understood by many to be another such symbol (see chapter 9). While a New Jerusalem is envisaged coming down from heaven (Rev. 21), before that appearance the old Jerusalem and her lands take center stage in world politics and become the decisive context for determining world history. With the exception of the period during the medieval Crusades, Israel and Jerusalem have proved insignificant in world politics until this present time. We live in an age now when Jerusalem has become, arguably, the most significant city in the world.
